The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated when the vehicle was started, the defroster was activated; however, the defroster failed to function as intended. The contact became aware that there was smoke inside the vehicle before hearing a loud sound and the rear glass then fractured. In addition, the contact’s minor grandson was seated in the rear seat of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The contact was informed of an unknown recall however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.
