While driving my vehicle, with around 85,000 miles, the engine suddenly began running rough and felt jerky and sluggish. This was concerning and potentially dangerous situation, as the engine failure happened while I was travelling at high speed. A sudden loss of power on the highway put me and other drivers at serious risk. The check engine light came on, so I pulled over as soon as I could safely do so. Shortly after, the light started flashing, so I shut off the engine and contacted the dealership service department. They advised having the vehicle towed in for inspection. Prior to this event, I had not had any issues with the vehicle nor had the check engine light come on. After looking into it, the dealership initially suspected a thrown rod but said they wouldn’t know the full extent of the issue until they could tear down the engine. Upon further inspection, they determined that the lifters had failed and would need to be replaced. The dealership has performed all regular maintenance and oil changes on my vehicle. When I asked what could have caused this, they explained that it’s a known issue with these lifters and engines — one that Chevrolet has experienced for years, even in models prior to my 2017.
